Let the chat edit your paper
Ask AI Chat to write, add to, rename or edit your paper, then check each change and undo it if you want.
AI Chat can change your paper directly when you ask it to. It shows a card for each change, so you can see what it did and undo it.
When the chat can edit
The chat can write in your paper when all of these are true:
- Read this document is on in the chat’s + menu (it is by default).
- You can edit the paper. Viewers and commenters on a shared paper can’t use chat edits.
- Your AI rules allow it.
The rules decide what kind of change it can make:
- With Drafting sentences or paragraphs off, the chat can still add an outline (headings and short bullet points), but no paragraphs.
- With Editing and proofreading off, it won’t rewrite or proofread your text.
- With both drafting and Brainstorming and outlining off, it won’t write into your paper at all.
Ask for a change
Say what you want in the chat box, for example:
- “Tighten the second paragraph of the introduction.”
- “Add a short conclusion that sums up the three findings.”
- “Write an outline for this essay.”
- “Rename this document to something clearer.”
What you see while it works
A card in the chat shows what it is doing:
- “Writing your document…” then “Wrote” and the paper’s title
- “Adding to your document…” then “Added to your document”
- “Renaming your document…”
- “Editing your document…” then “Edited” and the number of passages, with “Changed in place”
While the chat is writing, your paper is locked so your typing and its changes don’t mix. The status bar says “Chat is editing your paper” with Stop. Click Stop to end it early.
If some edits couldn’t be placed, the card says how many “couldn’t be matched to the text”. Those parts of your paper are left as they were.
Check what changed
On an editing card, click Show to jump to the changed passage and see its Before wording. If several passages changed, click Next to step through them. The old wording can be selected, so you can copy it back by hand.
On cards for writing, adding or renaming, View takes you to your paper.
Undo a chat edit
Click Undo on the card (“Undo this change”). The card then says “Change undone” and “The document is back to how it was”.
If you have changed the paper since, Undo may not be able to put it back cleanly. You see “The document has changed since, so Undo can’t restore it cleanly. Version history has every earlier state.” Click Open to go to Version history.
Before every chat edit, Writing Studio saves a copy called Before AI Chat edit in Version history. You can always restore it or make a copy from it. See See and restore past versions.
Allowance and writing history
A chat edit is part of the chat’s reply, so it uses the 1 AI chat message you sent. See AI allowances and limits.
Text the chat writes into your paper is recorded as AI text in your writing history, and chat edits are listed among the AI features you used. Text you later rewrite by hand counts as yours.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get my text back after a chat edit?
Yes. Click Undo on the chat's card. If that no longer works because you changed the paper since, open Version history and restore the Before AI Chat edit copy.
Why won't the chat change my paper?
Read this document must be on, you must be able to edit the paper, and your AI rules must allow it. Viewers and commenters on a shared paper can't use chat edits.
Does a chat edit use an AI edit?
No. The edit comes with the chat's reply, so it uses the AI chat message you sent.
