Account and billing

Upgrade, change or cancel your plan

Open in ChatGPT

Move to Plus or Pro, switch between plans or between monthly and yearly billing, update your card, or cancel.

To upgrade, open the plans from See pricing in the account menu or Pricing above your paper, then click Choose Plus or Choose Pro. To cancel, go to Settings, then Plan and usage, and click Manage next to Subscription.

Payments run through a secure billing window from our billing provider (Clerk Billing, which runs on Stripe). Your card details never pass through Writing Studio.

Open the plans

You can open the plans window from:

  • See pricing in the account menu (click your name at the top of the sidebar), on Free.
  • Pricing in the bar above your paper, on Free.
  • Change plan in Settings under Plan and usage, on any plan. On a paid plan, Manage plan in the account menu takes you there.
  • See pricing in any message about a used-up allowance.

At the top, switch between Monthly and Yearly. Yearly is selected by default and costs about half as much. See Plans and pricing for the prices.

Upgrade from Free

  1. Open the plans and choose Monthly or Yearly.
  2. Click Choose Plus or Choose Pro.
  3. Enter your card details in the checkout window and confirm.

Your new allowances start right away.

If you picked a plan on the Writing Studio website before signing up, the app remembers it. After you create your account, the plans window opens straight into checkout for that plan.

Switch plans or billing period

On a paid plan, your own plan’s card says Current plan and Your plan. The other cards offer Switch to and the plan name, and a line under each button tells you when the change would start:

  • To a more expensive plan, such as Plus to Pro: “Starts right away.”
  • To a cheaper plan or to Free: it starts when your current billing period ends, and you keep your current plan until then. The card shows the date, for example “Starts 12 October”.
  • Between monthly and yearly on the same plan (Switch to yearly or Switch to monthly): checkout shows the start date before you pay.

A change that’s waiting to start shows Upcoming, or Starts with its date, on that plan’s card.

Cancel your plan

  1. Click your name at the top of the sidebar and choose Manage plan. This opens Settings at Plan and usage.
  2. Next to Subscription, click Manage.
  3. In the billing window, cancel your subscription.

You can also click Switch to Free on the Free card in the plans window. It opens the same billing window.

You keep your paid plan until the end of the period you’ve paid for. Plan and usage then shows when it ends and that Free follows. Your documents, sources and PDFs stay as they are.

See what you pay and when

Go to Settings, then Plan and usage. Under your plan’s name you’ll see how it’s billed and what happens next, for example “Billed monthly · renews 12 October”.

For more detail, click Manage next to Subscription. The billing window shows what you pay and when.

If a payment fails

If your card payment doesn’t go through, Plan and usage shows “Payment didn’t go through: update your card” in red, with an Update card button.

  1. Click Update card. Your account window opens on its billing page, where your cards are kept.
  2. Add a new card or update the one on file.

Frequently asked questions

When does a new plan start?

Moving to a more expensive plan starts right away. Moving to a cheaper plan or to Free starts when your current billing period ends, and you keep your current plan until then.

What happens to my work if I cancel?

Nothing. Your drafts, sources and PDFs are yours on every plan. When the paid period ends, you're on Free with its lower AI allowances.

Where can I see what I've paid?

Go to Settings, then Plan and usage, and click Manage next to Subscription. The billing window shows what you pay and when.

Does deleting my account cancel my plan?

Don't rely on it. Cancel your plan under Plan and usage first, so it can't renew, and then delete your account.
