EndNote
Move your references between EndNote and Writing Studio with RIS files, in either direction.
Writing Studio doesn’t connect to EndNote directly, but you can move your references between them in either direction with an RIS file. RIS is a standard format that both read and write.
Bring your EndNote references into Writing Studio
Step 1: Export from EndNote
- In EndNote, select the references you want to move, or show the whole library to move everything.
- Choose File > Export.
- Set the output style to RefMan (RIS) Export. If it isn’t in the list, choose Select Another Style to find it.
- Save the file.
EndNote saves the file as a .txt file. Before you import it, change the end of its name from .txt to .ris, for example from My EndNote Library.txt to My EndNote Library.ris.
Step 2: Import into Writing Studio
- Click Library in the left sidebar.
- Click Import at the top of the library.
- Choose the .ris file.
You can also drag the file straight onto the library. Writing Studio shows “Imported N sources”, and how many were already in your library.
What comes across
For each reference, Writing Studio reads the title, authors, year, journal or book title, publisher, volume, issue, pages, DOI, web address, abstract and type.
Entries without a title are skipped. Once a source is in your library, you can cite it in any style. See Cite a source with @.
Send your Writing Studio sources to EndNote
Step 1: Export from Writing Studio
- Some sources: in your Library, select the sources you want, then click RIS in the bar that shows how many are selected. The file downloads as library.ris.
- The sources cited in one paper: at the end of the paper, open the reference list’s Copy menu and choose Download RIS file. See Your reference list.
Step 2: Import into EndNote
- In EndNote, choose File > Import. On Windows, choose File > Import > File.
- Choose the .ris file.
- Set Import Option to Reference Manager (RIS).
- Click Import.
Keep both up to date
Nothing syncs by itself. When you add references in EndNote, export them again and import the file. Writing Studio merges sources it already has, so you won’t get duplicates. See Find and merge duplicate sources.
What’s not supported
- A direct EndNote connection or automatic sync.
- PDFs, notes and groups. Only the reference details come across. See Upload PDFs.
- EndNote citations in a Word document (Cite While You Write). If you import a Word file with them, they come in as plain text. See Microsoft Word.
Frequently asked questions
Does Writing Studio connect to EndNote directly?
No. Writing Studio doesn't connect to EndNote. An RIS file is how you move references between them.
Why can't Writing Studio see my EndNote export?
EndNote saves RIS exports as a .txt file. Change the end of the file name from .txt to .ris, then import it.
Do my PDFs come across from EndNote?
No, only the reference details. Upload your PDFs to the Writing Studio library separately.
