Checking your paper

Get an AI peer review

Open in ChatGPT

Get a reviewer's report on your paper, with strengths, weaknesses, questions and comments on passages. Included on Plus and Pro.

A peer review reads your paper the way a journal reviewer would, and writes a report for you: a recommendation, ratings, strengths, weaknesses, questions, and comments on specific passages. It gives feedback only and never rewrites your paper.

Who can use it

  • Free: not included. The review shows “Comes with Plus.” You can still run one with your own AI key.
  • Plus: 5 peer reviews a month.
  • Pro: unlimited, with fair-use limits.

Peer reviews have their own allowance. They don’t use your document reviews. See AI allowances and limits.

Run a peer review

  1. Open the Check tab and, under More checks, click Peer review. If the Review tab is already open, click Peer review at its top.
  2. Click Run peer review.
  3. It takes a little while. Click Stop to end it early. A stopped review isn’t counted.

The report is kept with your paper. It says when it ran and how much has changed since. Click Re-run for a fresh review after you revise.

What the report includes

  • A recommendation: accept, minor revisions, major revisions or reject, as a reviewer would tell an editor.
  • Ratings from 1 to 5 for originality, rigour, clarity, evidence and significance.
  • An overview of two or three paragraphs.
  • Strengths: specific things the paper does well.
  • Weaknesses: each with enough detail to act on.
  • Reviewer questions: what a reviewer would ask you.
  • Comments on passages: notes tied to exact passages. Click the quoted passage to jump to it in your paper.

Point at a weakness or a question and click Ask AI to take it to the chat, so you can talk through how to fix it.

Add the comments to your paper

Under Comments on passages, click Add to Comments. Each comment is added to its passage, labelled “AI peer review”, so you can work through them in the Comments panel and resolve them as you go. Click Open Comments to see them.

If your paper is shared, the review warns you first: “Everyone with access will see these.” If a passage has changed since the review ran, its comment isn’t added, and you are told how many were skipped.

See Add and reply to comments.

Long papers

For a very long paper, the review may only read the start. It tells you, for example “Read only the first 12,000 of 15,000 words. The rest of the paper isn’t in this review.”

AI rules

Peer review needs Feedback on my writing to be allowed in your AI rules. If it isn’t, you see “Not allowed on this assignment”.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a peer review on the Free plan?

Not with the included AI. Peer reviews come with Plus (5 a month) and Pro. On any plan, you can run one with your own AI key.

Does a peer review use my document reviews?

No. Peer reviews have their own allowance, separate from Proofread, Claims and Tone.

Will the peer review rewrite my paper?

No. It gives feedback only. It doesn't change your text unless you choose to add its comments to your paper.
