Compare the Free, Plus and Pro plans, their monthly and yearly prices, and the AI allowances each one includes.

Writing Studio has three plans: Free, Plus and Pro. All three include unlimited documents, sources and citations. The paid plans raise how much AI you can use, and add peer reviews and literature reviews.

Which plan fits

  • Free: everything local, unlimited. Good for trying Writing Studio and for papers where you need a little AI help.
  • Plus: for a term of writing.
  • Pro: for a thesis or submission cycle.

Paying yearly costs about half as much. The pricing page shows this as “save 49%”, and it opens on Yearly by default. You can cancel any time. See Upgrade, change or cancel your plan.

Daily allowances reset at midnight UTC. Monthly allowances reset on the 1st of each month (UTC), not on the day you subscribed.

Pro’s unlimited allowances, and literature reviews on Plus, have fair-use limits to prevent abuse. You won’t reach them through normal writing. If you ever do, Writing Studio tells you, and you can email support@writingstudio.com to have the limit lifted.

Plus also includes email support, and Pro includes priority support. Anyone can email support@writingstudio.com, or use Email support in the Help menu. See Get help from support.

Free on every plan

These are never counted and never limited by your plan:

  • Unlimited documents.
  • Unlimited sources in your library, and uploading and reading PDFs.
  • Citing with @, searching the Citation finder, and looking up a DOI or other ID.
  • Every citation style, with your reference list kept up to date.
  • Reference checks in Check my paper, which run without AI.
  • Full export to Word, PDF, LaTeX and web page, and importing Word files.
  • BibTeX and RIS import and export.
  • Sharing, comments, publishing and version history.
  • Reading your assignment brief (only the hourly limit applies).

Uploads have the same limits on every plan: 50 MB per PDF, 15 MB per image, 100 uploads an hour and 500 MB a day.

Use your own AI key on any plan

Every plan, including Free, can connect your own key from Anthropic (Claude), OpenAI (ChatGPT), Google (Gemini) or xAI (Grok). Then:

  • AI features don’t use your plan’s allowances. That includes peer reviews and literature reviews, even on Free.
  • Citation checks, and the claim check in the Citation checker, still use your allowances.
  • The hourly limit still applies, at 600 AI requests an hour.

Click See pricing in the account menu (your name at the top of the sidebar), or Pricing in the bar above your paper. On a paid plan, choose Manage plan in the account menu, then Change plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is Writing Studio free?

Yes. The Free plan has no time limit and includes unlimited documents, sources, citations in every style and full export. It also includes small daily AI allowances. Plus and Pro raise those allowances.

How much do I save by paying yearly?

About half. Plus is $15 a month billed $180 a year instead of $29 a month, and Pro is $35 a month billed $420 a year instead of $69 a month. The pricing page shows this as save 49%.

Is Pro really unlimited?

Pro has no set allowances, but it has fair-use limits to prevent abuse. Normal writing, even a whole thesis, won't reach them. If you ever reach one, email support@writingstudio.com and we'll lift it.

Do I lose my work if I go back to Free?

No. Your drafts are yours on every plan. Going back to Free only lowers your AI allowances.
