Log out
Log out of Writing Studio, and what happens to the copy of your work on this computer when you do.
To log out, click your name at the top of the sidebar and choose Log out. Writing Studio sends any unsaved changes to your account first, then clears this computer’s copy and takes you to the sign-in page.
What happens when you log out
- Writing Studio sends any changes that haven’t reached your account yet.
- If everything is backed up, this computer’s copy of your papers is cleared.
- Your own AI key, if you added one, is always removed from this browser.
- You land on the sign-in page.
Your work is still in your account. Sign in again, here or on another device, and it comes back.
If not everything is backed up
Sometimes work can’t reach your account before you log out, for example when you’re offline or a file is too big to back up. Then you see Not everything is backed up, with a list of what’s only on this computer. You have three choices:
- Download a copy, then clear this computer: Writing Studio makes a zip of all your work, the same one as Export everything. Check it’s in your downloads, then click Clear this computer and log out. Use this on a shared or public computer.
- Keep it on this computer: you log out, but the work stays in this browser and backs up the next time you sign in here. Use this on your own computer.
- Cancel: stay signed in.
If your latest words couldn’t be saved
In rare cases, the latest words in a paper couldn’t be saved anywhere. The dialog then warns that logging out loses your latest words in that paper, whichever option you choose.
Before you go on, save those words:
- Click Copy the text, then paste it somewhere safe.
- Or click Download .txt and check the file is in your downloads.
If you’re signed out without logging out
If your session ends, for example because you signed out of this device from another one, you see “You’ve been signed out. Writing still saves here, and backs up once you sign in again.” Click Sign in again to carry on. See Manage your password and sign-in.
Frequently asked questions
Is my work deleted when I log out?
No. Work that's backed up to your account comes back when you sign in again, on any device. Only this computer's copy is cleared.
What if I'm offline when I log out?
Writing Studio can't back up your latest changes, so it asks what to do. Download a copy first, or keep the work on this computer so it backs up the next time you sign in here.
Do I need to add my own AI key again after logging out?
Yes. Logging out always removes your own AI key from this browser. Add it again in Settings under AI after you sign in.
