Your data and privacy
Where Writing Studio keeps your work, what goes to AI providers, and what is never used to train AI.
Writing Studio is local-first: your papers, sources and PDFs are saved in your browser first, then backed up to your account. When you use AI, only the text that request needs is sent to the AI provider, and your writing is never used to train AI models.
Where your work is kept
- In your browser. Everything you write saves in this browser first, less than a second after you stop typing. That’s why writing keeps working offline.
- In your account. When you’re signed in, your documents, sources, PDFs and images back up to your account. Signing in on another device brings them back.
You can check the backup in Settings, under Your data. It shows whether everything is Backed up, or how many items are not backed up yet. See How saving and backup work.
A few things stay in one browser only and are never synced:
- Your theme. See Change the theme.
- Your own AI key, if you use one.
What goes to AI providers
The AI included with Writing Studio runs on Claude models from Anthropic. When you use an AI feature, the text it needs goes to Anthropic, only to answer that request.
If you use your own AI key, the text goes to that company on your key, under your own agreement with them. Citation and claim checks still run on the included Claude, through Anthropic.
You can see which AI runs each job in Settings, under AI. Autocomplete sends text as you write, so turn it off in Paper settings if you don’t want that for a paper.
Your writing is not used for training
Writing Studio doesn’t use your writing to train AI models.
Your own AI key stays in your browser
Your key stays in the browser you added it in until you log out. It is attached to each request and passed to the provider, never stored on a server.
Your writing history is private
Writing Studio records where text in your paper came from (typed, pasted, imported or accepted from AI), never your keystrokes. Only you can see it unless you choose to share a writing receipt. See See your writing history.
Payments
Payments go through our billing provider (Clerk Billing, which runs on Stripe). Your card details never pass through Writing Studio.
Take your data with you or delete it
- Download a copy of all your work as one zip file at any time.
- Delete your work or your account from Settings, under Your data.
