Checking your paper
Proofread and review your paper
Run an AI proofread, a claims check or a tone check on your whole paper, then apply or dismiss each suggestion.
AI reviews read your whole paper and suggest specific fixes, right where they apply. There are three: Proofread, Claims and Tone. Each run uses 1 document review.
Open a review
- Open the Check tab in the panel on the right.
- Under More checks, click Proofread, Claims or Tone.
- The Review tab opens beside your paper. Use the buttons at its top to switch between reviews.
The three reviews
- Proofread: grammar, punctuation, word choice and register.
- Claims: each cited claim checked against its source’s abstract. Findings say which source they are about.
- Tone: whether your academic register is consistent.
The fourth button, Peer review, is a different kind of review. See Get an AI peer review.
Run a review
- Under the review’s description, a line shows what you have left, like “7 of 10 document reviews left this month on your plan.”
- Click Run proofread, Run claims or Run tone.
- While it reads, you see “Reading the document…” with how long it has taken. Click Stop to end it. A stopped review isn’t counted.
- The suggestions appear as cards in the panel and are marked in your paper.
The results are kept with your paper. Next time, the review says when it ran and how much has changed since, like “Ran 2 hours ago · 600 words changed since”. Click Re-run to review the paper again.

Work through the suggestions
Each card shows its category, the suggested change and the reason for it.
- Show in text jumps to the passage in your paper.
- Apply makes the change.
- Dismiss removes the suggestion without changing anything.
- On Claims cards, Find a source opens Cite on that sentence, and Remove citation takes the flagged source out of it.
When there are several categories, click one at the top to see only those. To go through every suggestion in your paper one at a time, click Review with the number of changes and “one by one”. See Go through suggestions one by one.
What the messages mean
- “Nothing flagged. That is a result, not an error.”: the review found nothing to fix.
- “Every suggestion has been dealt with.”: you have applied or dismissed them all.
- A note that some suggestions were “discarded because they could not be matched to text in the document”: the AI pointed at words that aren’t in your paper, so those were left out.
- “That passage has changed since the review ran. Re-run to refresh.”: you edited the passage after the review.
Long papers
A review reads a long paper one part at a time. After the first part you see “Read the first” and the number of words read so far. Click Review the next part to continue where it stopped. Each part counts as 1 document review, and the button says so before you click. When it has read everything, it says “Read the whole paper” and how many parts it took.
Allowance and AI rules
Proofread, Claims and Tone share your document reviews:
- Free: 1 a month
- Plus: 10 a month
- Pro: unlimited, with fair-use limits
A review that you stop, that fails, or that runs on an empty document isn’t counted. On your own AI key, reviews don’t use your plan’s allowance. Peer reviews have their own allowance. See AI allowances and limits.
Each review needs your AI rules to allow it. Proofread needs Editing and proofreading, Claims needs Finding and checking sources, and Tone needs Feedback on my writing. Otherwise you see “Not allowed on this assignment”.
Offline, the run button says “Needs internet”.
