Guide autocomplete
Tell autocomplete what you want instead, or describe what the next paragraph should do.
You can tell autocomplete what you want in your own words. Refine a suggestion that isn’t right, or describe what the next paragraph should do and get a draft to accept.
Refine a suggestion
- While a suggestion is showing, press ⇧→ (Shift+→ on Windows), or click Refine on the bar under it.
- A box opens that asks “What should it do instead?”. Type what you want, like “Mention the sample size”, and press Enter.
- A new suggestion replaces the old one. Accept it with Tab or →, as usual.
To get a fresh try without changing anything, click Try again, or press Enter with the box empty.
Press Esc, or click somewhere else, to close the box. The suggestion stays as it was.
Guide the next paragraph
- Put your cursor at the end of a paragraph, with no suggestion showing.
- Press ⇧→. A box opens that asks “What should the next paragraph do?”.
- Describe it, like “Compare the two studies and say which has the stronger method”, and press Enter.
- A whole paragraph appears in grey. Press Tab or → to accept it, or Esc to dismiss it.
Use a ready-made steer
Under the box are one-click steers:
- Try again (when refining)
- Focus on methodology
- More formal
- Add a counterpoint
- Cite a source
- Be more specific
Click one instead of typing.
Draft a paragraph for a section
Each heading in Section briefs has a Draft a paragraph button. It writes one paragraph at the end of that section, using the section’s brief, as grey text you can accept or dismiss. It counts as 1 AI autocomplete. See Guide the AI with briefs.
Allowance and AI rules
Each new suggestion that appears counts as 1 AI autocomplete: 10 a day on Free, 3,000 a month on Plus, and unlimited on Pro, with fair-use limits. On your own AI key it isn’t counted. See AI allowances and limits.
Guiding needs autocomplete to be on, and your AI rules must allow Drafting sentences or paragraphs.
On your phone
Tap Refine on the bar under a suggestion. The box sits just above your keyboard, with the same steers.
Frequently asked questions
Does refining a suggestion use another autocomplete?
Yes. Each new suggestion that appears counts as 1 AI autocomplete. If nothing appears, nothing is counted.
Can I close the box without losing the suggestion?
Yes. Press Esc or click somewhere else. The suggestion stays as it was.
Why is Draft a paragraph missing?
It only shows when your AI rules allow drafting. Check the AI rules chip beside your paper's title.
